EXAMINER PSYCHOLOGY

The Phrasing Ladder.Sounding like a colleague.

Examiners mark not only what you see, but how you communicate it. Hesitant guessing creates anxiety; calm, structured observations reassure the examiners immediately.

01

The Phrasing Ladder

Move smoothly from 'This plain radiograph demonstrates...' to 'The primary differential is...' without colloquialisms or uncertain hesitation.

02

Emergency Safety Red Lines

Certain conditions (e.g. malrotation with volvulus, testicular torsion, cauda equina, dissecting aneurysm) require instant verbal urgency and red telephone notifications.

03

Handling the 'Bouncers'

When presented with rare, complex spotters, focus on safe systematic description rather than guessing esoteric eponyms.

Frequent Oral Viva Pitfalls

  • Stalling in prolonged silence while staring at images instead of talking through key findings.
  • Arguing with examiner prompts rather than graciously accepting subtle directional clues.
  • Forgetting next clinical steps (e.g. asking for prior imaging, urgent surgical referral, MDT discussion).
  • Freezing on a difficult case and allowing fatigue to bleed into subsequent rapid-fire cases.

Examiner Rubric & Scoring Standard

Each of the four examiners awards marks from 4 to 8. An aggregate average of 6.0 per examiner is required for a pass across both viva stations.

8.0 Marks: Outstanding clinical authority, complete synthesis, and flawless management.
6.0 Marks: Pass mark standard — safe, competent clinical radiologist with sound reasoning.
5.5 Marks: Borderline borderline fail — hesitation, missed emergency implications, or unsafe advice.
4.0 Marks: Severe clinical safety failure or refusal to follow clear diagnostic paths.
