Spotting the obvious trauma, air-fluid levels, or overt cortical steps immediately before eye fatigue sets in.
The Review Areas Scan
Rigorous check of standard blind spots: lung apices, retrocardiac space, skull base, scaphoid fat pad, and pelvis rings.
The Normal Courage Rule
Approximately 40-50% of films in the rapid reporting pack are completely normal. Calling a normal film normal is where first-class passes are won.
Frequent Short Case Pitfalls
- Over-calling accessory ossicles and sesamoids (os trigonum, fabella, os peroneum) as acute fractures.
- Fixating on minor degenerative changes while missing subtle pneumothorax or rib notchings.
- Failing to review soft-tissue signs: sail signs, pronator quadratus fat stripe, prevertebral widening.
- Running out of time due to lingering longer than 60 seconds on ambiguous films during Pass 1.
Pass Criteria & Mark Strategy
Rapid reporting is scored strictly out of 30. A pass typically requires at least 27 correct calls. False positives carry heavy penalties in overall aggregate scoring.
